Indigestion, feeling bloated?
Oh, indigestion... what a truly bothersome issue, isn't it? In Korean medicine, it's often viewed as 'Qi deficiency' (기허, giheo) or 'dampness accumulation' (습적, seupjeok), and sometimes interpreted as a result of 'Yin-Yang imbalance' (음양 불균형, eumyang bulgyunhyeong). That's right, you need to listen carefully to the signals your body is sending. As we talk, we'll be able to converse as comfortably as old friends.
"Why is it always me who struggles with indigestion?"
Our bodies are truly mysterious. Even eating the same food, some people are perfectly fine, while others experience discomfort. In Korean medicine, this is often explained in relation to 'body constitution' (체질, chejil). That's right, just as each of our bodies produces a different timbre like a musical instrument, our digestive systems also vary slightly from person to person. Some are sensitive to flour-based foods, while others struggle to digest fatty foods. This is proof that our bodies are all telling different stories.
"How does Korean Medicine view indigestion?"
In Korean medicine, indigestion isn't simply viewed as "food not going down well." It's seen as a symptom that appears when the flow of our body's 'Qi' (기, gi) – the 'power that transports and transforms food' – becomes weak. Therefore, we focus on treatments that replenish Qi deficiency (기허, giheo) within the body, eliminate dampness accumulation (습적, seupjeok), and restore Yin-Yang balance. Much like tuning each instrument to create harmonious music.
"So, what does the actual treatment involve?"
Treatment methods are highly diverse. They range from replenishing Qi within the body and eliminating dampness using herbal medicine (한약, hanyak), to acupuncture (침술, chimsul) which smooths the flow of Qi throughout the body. Just like tailoring a custom suit, we determine the treatment method to fit the patient's body condition and constitution (체질, chejil). Communication with the patient is incredibly important during this process, as we need to consider their daily life, eating habits, and even stress levels.
"Will I get better immediately after treatment?"
To be honest, sometimes improvement is immediate, but other times it may take a little longer. What is clear, however, is that Korean medical treatment strives to resolve the fundamental cause. Sometimes, conversations in the treatment room, where the subtle aroma of herbal medicine (한약) lingers, can greatly help in healing both body and mind. Watching the body gradually recover in this way is a truly precious experience.
If you are struggling with indigestion, please don't suffer alone. Our bodies send signals that are much more complex and subtle than we might think. Let's interpret those signals together and discover what your body and mind truly desire. In that process, Korean medicine can be of great help. I want to hear your story, just like a conversation with an old friend. Let's take a step forward together towards a healthy life.
