1. Skin Rash Spreading Like a Christmas Tree: Pityriasis Rosea

Pityriasis rosea is a skin condition characterized by the sudden appearance of red patches on the skin. It is typically marked by a small herald patch that appears first, followed by oval, scaly patches that distribute in a Christmas tree pattern, centered around the trunk. It usually appears on the trunk or proximal parts of the body, lasting for about 1 to 2 months before spontaneously resolving.

The exact cause has not been clearly identified, but it is believed to be associated with infections such as human herpesvirus 6 and 7. Prodromal symptoms such as fever, sore throat, and malaise may precede the rash. Fortunately, it is not contagious, and the risk of complications is low. However, it can sometimes be accompanied by itching (pruritus) and may leave behind post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, requiring careful attention.

2. Pityriasis Rosea as a Skin Rash Caused by Wind-Heat in Traditional Korean Medicine

In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), pityriasis rosea is categorized within the scope of "Wind rash" (風疹). It is understood that the rash forms when an external pathogen, Wind-Heat (風熱), invades the skin (肌膚). The sudden appearance of skin symptoms after an acute febrile illness can also be explained by this pathological mechanism.

In mild cases (輕症), the course of the illness tends not to be prolonged and often resolves spontaneously. However, when symptoms are severe or recur frequently, "pattern identification and treatment" (變證施治) is necessary. The Wind-Heat pattern (風熱型) is characterized by red, itchy skin rashes, in which case herbs with the action of "dispelling Wind and clearing Heat" (疏風清熱) are utilized.

3. Herbal Medicine Treatment to Dispel Wind and Clear Heat

For the herbal medicine treatment of pityriasis rosea, herbs that "dispel Wind and stop itching" (消風止痒) and "clear Heat and cool Blood" (清熱凉血) are frequently used. During the acute phase, modified formulas of Yinqiao San (銀翹散) or Xiaofeng San (消風散) are often prescribed to eliminate Wind-Heat, using herbs such as Flos Lonicerae (銀花), Fructus Forsythiae (連翹), Herba Menthae (薄荷), and Radix Rehmanniae (生地黃). For severe itching (pruritus), herbs like Rhizoma Atractylodis (蒼朮) and Cortex Dictamni (白鮮皮) can be added to enhance the action of "draining Wind and stopping itching" (瀉風止痒).

4. Boosting Skin Immunity with Acupuncture Therapy

Acupuncture treatment is known to be effective in alleviating the itching associated with pityriasis rosea. Stimulating commonly used acupoints for pain and pruritus control, such as Hegu (LI4), Waiguan (SJ5), and Quchi (LI11), helps inhibit peripheral nerve conduction and promote the secretion of analgesic substances.

5. Lifestyle Guidelines for Healthy Skin

Pityriasis rosea is generally a condition that resolves spontaneously without specific treatment. Therefore, it is important to take care not to worsen symptoms and to make efforts to boost immunity. Primarily, adopting lifestyle habits that minimize skin irritation will be beneficial.
